About MJReese.com

Originally launched in 1997 as a college site during my undergraduate days at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside, the site was hosted on a college server and contained a lot of personal information. As I have been a life long genealogist (since the fourth grade) I wanted a better outlet to continue my research and reach more people. As a result, I expanded the site to my AOL account then to a local Wisconsin Internet provider once I moved to Boston. This provider hosted the account until 2000 when mjreese.com was purchased and The MJReese.Community was launched.

The MJReese.Community has always been dedicated to my family and researching my roots. The Reese Family Genealogy is the primary focus of the site. The Milwaukee Brewers, another lifelong passion of mine, has also been a part of the site since its launch. In 2003, after emmersing myself in my new carreer path, I decided to add a new area to the Website: Educational Resources. As I created projects for my course work I would post them on my site for my classmates and partners to view. Upon completion of the program, I reformated the section to include my personal Webquests and other resources that I have created or found useful.

Times and Trials between this site and Yahoo, Inc.

December 26, 2005-January 12, 2006

After five years of exisistence, MJReese.com went black on December 26, 2005. Every year since then Yahoo has renewed this domain for me but did not do so this time despite the agreement that still exists on the Yahoo Website (search for Domain Renew, then click on "Will Yahoo! renew my domain name for me?").

In speaking with people at Network Solutions and Yahoo, I could not resolve the issue for several weeks. Luckily, Network Solutions gave me two fifteen day extensions.

After countless calls and emails, I finally was able to reach someone who was able to assist me. On January 12, the site was finally renewed and I actually received an unsolicited credit for one month.

February 7, 2006-Present

I thought my problems were over, but more obstacles are threatening the existence of this site.

Somewhere between 1997 and 1999 I registered for the m_reese Yahoo ID. I used this account, for free, for a variety of purposes including any available Yahoo services that interested me including e-mail. Once I registered the MJReese.com domain, I switched my primary email to that domain. I still used me yahoo email as a public account (to avoid spam) and other purposes. This ID was also where I set up payment information for the site.

When I moved to Milwaukee in 2002, I signed up for DSL with Yahoo (which then became SBC Yahoo DSL) using this ID. I had to create a new ID (mjreese8@ameritech), but was able to merge my m_reese ID. This allowed me to have POP access to all Yahoo IDs, which was kind of nice.

I left Milwaukee in August 2005 and canceled the DSL. At that time I was supposed to be prompted to unmerge my DSL (mjreese8) and Yahoo (m_reese) IDs, but this never happened as I never used the mjreese8 account. I was still able to use my m_reese account after I canceled the DSL.

Flash forward six months: I can no longer access anything with the free m_reese account that I have had for nearly a decade. I can still access the DSL account, though.

I call Yahoo and SBC (this is just before the merger with AT&T) and they refuse to help me. I try to ask them to explain why this happened six months after the cancelation (and lack of payment) with no luck. I eventually give up because I didn't see the purpose.

But wait. I get my February credit card statement and I wasn't charged for the Website. Well, it was still operational so maybe I was charged twice on the previous cylce (which happens on occasion). March arrives and still no charge. I again call the companies and have no success. I email, no success. I call the person who helped me last time and he ignores me. Here I was telling the company I have not paid them in two months and I want to pay them, and they can't/won't help me. Go figure.

I am frustrated, so I start sending emails to executives by guessing their emails. I sent out 17 random emails and four were correct. I apparently reached the COO and one of the founders.

The next day (March 31), I received a call from a woman who says they are looking into it and will call me every day with an update. That remains to be seen, but I think my email hit someone important.

I do not know what will happen to MJReese.com. It may go black again. If so, it may not return. I know I have not updated the site as much as I (or you) would like, but I still enjoy tinkering.

If this site goes black I can be reached at the gmail address previously posted or the new lycos.com email. My ID on lycos is the name of this site minus the dot com.
