April 4:
First day opener
Lost first home opener

April 6: Brewers start 0-6
Officially the worse start in franchise history. What a way to start the season after ending last season with the franchise worse season ever (56-106)!

April 14: marks the 50th anniversary of the first game played at County Stadium. Milwaukee Braves Vs St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals returned 50 years to play the Brewers and mark the anniversary. Coincidence? Funny how the Brewers are celebrating this. I do not see the relevance.

April 15: Another Anniversary
With the Royals bringing the Brewers Streak of '87 back into the spotlight, today marks the 16th anniversary of Juan Nieves no-no. The only Brewers no hitter in franchise history occurred when Nieves blanked the Baltimore Orioles, 7-0, which was part of 13 consecutive victories by Milwaukee to open the season. They then lost the next 12, if I recall correctly. Sigh.

Also, Ned Yost gets his first home win on 4/15. Congratulations!

April 19: The Brewers and Astros played the longest game in Miller Park history -- 14 innings (4 hours, 4 minutes). Glendon Rusch won the game with a pinch hit bunt-single. He is the first pitcher to end a game with a walk-off hit since 8/1/97.

April 20: After 10 home games, the Brewers rank 27th in the major leagues in attendance with 16,540 fans per game, ahead of only Detroit (16,518), Tampa Bay (15,409) and Montreal (14,282). Miller Park is operating at 39% of the park's listed capacity. That ranks them ahead of only Toronto (35.7%) and Tampa Bay (33.3%). The total this year represents a drop of 30% from last year (237,877) and nearly 50% since Miller Park's inaugural season. --JSONLINE

April 25: Home Run Derby: Sexson (3) and Vander Wal (2) hit home runs in Atlanta including a Grand Slam by Vander Wal to bring the HR total to 27 for the season.

May 3: The 5,000,000th fan walked through the Miller Park turnstiles to watch the Brewers play in the 177 th games of the facility. Meanwhile, attendance is down nearly 100,000 from 2002 (30%).

May 10: Richie Sexson hits his 100th home run at the Reds' new ballpark. He leads the NL with 12 home runs and is the first to hit a HR into the upper deck at Great American Ballpark!

May 11: Eric Young hits the first inside the park home run at GABP in Cincinnati and the first since David Hulse did so on 8/1/95 against the Yankees against Mariano Rivera.

May 15: Another strikeout record set by the Brewers: 24 stikeouts in a 17 inning game. This breaks the 22 strikeouts in a 23 inning game set by the Mets (vs. San Francisco) in 1964. California holds the Major League record with 26 strike outs (vs. Oakland) in 1971. Sexson, who is no longer leading the majors in home runs, set a club record with 5 Ks went 0-7.

May 21: A good day!
Jenkins helped the Brewers win their first three consecutive games since last season, and first home sweep since July 26-28, 2002 against the Rockies with three homeruns. Jenkins last accomplished this on April 28, 2001 against Montreal. Sexson hit his 15th homerum putting him second in the majors, one behind Adam Dunn. Jenkins has 11 homeruns compared to Sosa's six. The Brewers won, 10-0!

May 27: Sanchez traded! I loved Sanchez despite his boneheaded moves. But I am really happy to see this trade as Sanchez continually displayed a poor attitude, unwillingness to improve, and poor sportsmanship. Scott Podsednik all the way!

May 30: The season is a third over already. Wow. The Brewers are on track for a 63-99 season, an improvement over last year. The team is more fun to watch this year, and they are setting expectations.

June 2: DeJean was named player of the week. It is great to get the Brewers some positive press!

June 4: The Brewers continue to make progress by removing players who are not living up to expectations. Milwaukee may not be the best team, but that does not mean we have to settle for mediocrity. Hammonds' release is welcome. Vander Wal and Clark are doing a superb job. Compare the salaries with Hammonds, and they are both all stars! I continue to believe that baseball needs to have a salary structure that is more incentive based or more like the NFLs which will not pay a player if they are released.

June 5 & 6: The Brewers won three games in a row after sweeping a double header against the Mets, then continued their four game winning streak (in three days) against the Red Sox as they began interleague play at Miller Park. This is the longest winning streak season-to-date! Go Brewers! Also of note, Sexson is in a MLB tie for first place with 19 home runs. The Brewers then played an awesome game at Miller Park, but lost 10-11, to the Red Sox on the next day, giving up two six run leads.

June 12: Young (9), and Wes Helms (11) established career high home runs. Richie Sexson hit #20 of the season, as well. Richie is on track to also have a new career high home run total by the end of the season!

June 17: Young recorded his 1,500th hit of his major league career!

June 18: I can't help but wonder if Glendon Rusch's days with the Brewers are numbered after giving up 8 runs in two innings tonight. I like Rusch and am baffled by this season. I hate to see him go, but something must be done.

June 25: The Cubs-Brewers bitter rivalry continues. After Yost got ejected yesterday and spanked 9-1, his team came back from a 5-1 deficit to handily beat the Cubs 12-6. It was the first time Jose Hernandez met his old team. He struck out 4 times, including three times against Sheets who, while not earning a decision, remains undefeated against the Cubs. In his 73rd game of the season, Hernandez has 100 Ks. Also, Ginter and Kieschnick belted the first two PH Homeruns for the Brewers this season.

July 1: The Brewers are 33-48 half way through the season. They are on track to have a 66-96 season, though I believe they still can do better than that, if they do not trade all their players away and De Jean stops blowing games.

Attendance has dropped 25% from a year ago. That said, the season attendance has mad a comeback this season, as 15 games into the home season, Miller Park attendance was down 30% from a year ago.

July 4: According to SI, Brooks Kieschnick has hit (4) more home runs than allowed (3). SI also states that Jose Hernandez is more than half way to 200 strike outs with the season half way over. The same issue polls many MLB players and it turns out while Milwaukee came in second as worst road city (24.1% of the votes), Miller Park came in second as best visiting locker room with 15.5% of the vote. Detroit (31.8%) is the worst city and Tampa (36.7%) has the best visiting clubhouse.

July 5: Young has a team leading 14 game hitting streak while Podsednik's nine game hitting streak ended.

July 6: The Brewers' season high hitting streak of 14 games by Young came to an end when EY failed to get on base when he Pinch hit for Sheets.

Podsednik is leading the majors reaching base safely in 36 consecutive games and is second in the league with batting average. He is being mentioned as a rookie of the year candidate. It would be cool to see him in the All Star Game, though it looks to be Jenkins. He is chasing Barry Bonds who has the season high streak of 39 games of reaching base safely. By the way the first d in Podsednik is silent so all the nicknames out there don't work.

A third and final note for the day, Sheets, who leads MLB in innings pitch and home runs, pitched a great game today giving up no homers and only one run getting his seventh win of the season.

July 7: The Brewers are playing .500 ball since. Since May 16, the team is 23-23. Go Crew!

July 9: On the one year anniversary of Miller Park's first All Star Game, Geoff Jenkins is elected by the fans to be the last man on the NL Roster with 2,872,200 votes. Though the votes for each player were not released, it is rumored not to have been close. He will join Sexson in Chicago as Milwaukee will have two representatives for the second straight year.

Randall Simon 'attacked' the Italian Sausage during the sausage race. He got off with a pocket change fine because he just meant to tap the sausage on the head.

The Brewers have played 12 extra inning games this season. In 2002 they played 13.

The Brewers have played four home games where no home runs were hit including three of the last four games. They have won all four.

July 10: Keith Ginter hit two home runs for his first multi-home run game of his career.

Podsednik, also tied Young with stolen bases, at 19.

July 13: Sexson enters the All Star Break with a 14 game hitting streak.

July 14: Sexson is named as the final player to the Home Run Derby. He is eliminated in the first round with one home run. Brett Boone was the only player to finish with fewer: 0.

July 15: Sexson was 0-2 at the All Star game and Geoff Jenkins was the only position player left on the bench as the American League won home field advantage for the 2003 World Series.

July 21: Podsednik reached base safely in 47 straight games, breaking the longest streak in the majors of the season of 39 set by Barry Bonds. Tonight, he failed to reach base for the first time in nearly two months. The record, by the way, is 84 set by Ted Williams.

July 24: The Brewers drew nearly 22,500 fans and passed the million mark in attendance in the 53rd home game of the season.

Bernie Mac's movie, "Mr. 3000" continues filming at Miller Park during the short homestand.

July 25: Attendance continues to improve from earlier in the season. Peaking in May with a 30% drop, Miller Park has recovered to only a 21% drop thus far, with the season 2/3 over.

July 27: Did you know Bob Uecker was born in Illinois in a "nativity-like setting?" Just one of his lines from his acceptance as he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as an announcer. Brewers congratulated him by being swept by the Rockies. Visit my tribute to Bob here. Audio of his speech is here.

August 5: Sexson hit his 30th HR of the season. He is the 6th Brewers player to have 2 or more than 30 HR seasons. It was also his 14th Multi HR game.

August 8: The Brewers are only 11 victories away from having a better record than last year. However, 11 of the 15 series that remain involve teams with winning records.

August 10: Paul Molitor Bobblehead day brought in the second highest attendance of the year: 37,521.

August 19: Brewers traded Young to San Francisco.

The Brewers treated Yost to aa 48th Birthday win. The second Bucket Head Brigade win! I was there. If you have a chance go on a Tuesday and sit in section 232. It is a blast!

August 21: Sweep! The Brewers won three in a row for the first time since June 25-27. It was the first sweep since sweeping the Mets on June 5th in a double header and the first three game sweep since May 19-21 against the Padres.

Miller Park is finally reviewed by ESPN.com, which is rating all the parks. I can live with what is said until the last statement. Miller Park is a much more enjotable experience the County Stadium! Click here to see the review. My comments coming in a future update.

August 22: Mike DeJean was traded to St. Louis.

August 23: The Brewers win the season series against the Pirates and win five in a row. It is the first time the Brewers have won five consecutive home games since April 2001 when Miller Park opened!

August 24: The Brewers current season high six game winning streak breaks many droughtts in Milwaukee. They have won six straight for the first time in five years, swept back-to-back series (3+ games) for the first time in six years (Detroit and Toronto in July 1987), won seven consecutive home games for the firtst time since 1995, the first time they have had a perfect homestand against multiple teams since May 1980, and the fitst time they have ever swept the Pirates in Milwaukee. Go Brewers!!!

The Brewers won their 54th game. They won their 54th game last year on Sept 19 and is now only 3 wins from having a better record than last year. They need to win 9 of their last 33 to miss 100 losses.

If they win we will come. The 36,238 fans in attendance was the third-largest crowd at Miller Park this year after opening day and Molitor bobblehead day..

August 29: All good things must come to an end. Tonight the Cubs, of all teams, not only ended the brewers streak of 10 wins, but also Podsednik's hitting streak. Unfortunately it was the first day without Geoff Jenkins who broke his theumb in yesterday's game.

August 30: Sexson had 4 RBIs giving him 100 for the season. This is the fourth time he has reached this mark. He joins Cooper, Thomas, Yount, and Burnits as the only Brewers to do this.

Podsednik has stolen base 10 consecutive times without being caught, including stealing home!

August 31: The Brewers have their first winning month since May 2001.

The Crew scored their 90th first inning run. Last year they only scored 63 times in the first.. Double plays, however are down to 114 from 154..

If the Brewrs win all but five of their games in September they will have a winning season. They need to win tthree to avoid a 100-loss season.

September 2: With only 8,703 fans, Miller Park marked a new lowest attendence record.

September 3: Brady Clark was a single away from a cycle. Nice try, and congratulations!

September 4: Scott Podesednik was naked N.L. Rookie of the Month!

September 5: Randall Simon returned to Miller Park.

September 6: Four days after setting a record low attendence base, fans from Chicago poured into Miller Park to set a record high as the park hit 46,218 baseball fans.

The Brewers had their first back-to-back losses since August 14th and 15th and began a long losing streak that ended the title, "hottest team in baseball." It was nice while it lasted!

September 7: The Brewers were 0-7 against the Cubs at Miller Park, or is it Wrigley North? We are 9-15 lifetime in Milwaukee against out rivals.

September 9: If Podsednik is named as N.L. Rookie of the Year, he has a good chance of becoming the fourth rookie since 1900 to finish a season with a .300 average, 40 steals and 100 runs. He currently needs 4 steals and 14 runs and, of course, to win the honor.

Eleventh Anniversary of Yount becoming MLB's 17th 3000th hit player.

September 11: Sheets is the first Brewer to have back-to-back 200+ inning seasons since Jamie Nacaro in 1992-93. He is 2 wins away from a career high.

Podsednik set a NL Brewers record with 38 stolen bases.

Brewers avoided being swept by the Astros in a four game set. They have not been swept in four since April 1998

September 24: Podsednik set a Brewers franchise record for rookies with his 169th double play. Pat Listach held the previous record. He was also the last (and only) player to where a Brewers uniform and be elected Rookie of the Year.

September 26: Podsednik was named to the Topps’ All-Star Rookie Team. He has set club rookie records for hits in a season, run scored, and has equaled the club rookie record for triples with seven joining Alex Sanchez (2002) and Ernest Riles (1985). He has also equaled Brewers franchise record, also held by Geoff Jenkins (9/17/99 - 9/8/00), when he stole 14 consecutive bases from August 15 - September 9. He is currently ranked third on Brewers’ single season Top 10 and trails second place by two (Paul Molitor, 1987 - 45).

September 27: Richie Sexson tied the Brewers franchise record with himself and Gorman Thomas with 45 home runs.

September 28: Podsednik became only the fourh rookie since 1900 to finish a season with a .300+ average, 40+ steals and 100 runs. He joins Ichiro Suzuki (2001), "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (1911) and Jimmy Barrett (1900). He finished the season batting .314 with 29 doubles, eight triples, nine home runs and 58 RBIs. He also led rookies in nine different offensive categories and finished second in the Major Leagues in batting with runners in scoring position and first in batting average in day games.

The Brewers had a good year. I say that as it was an improvement. Yost did his job. He made the team play and kept them motivated. For that he deserves a contract extention. Payne need to show the team, city, and state that he is committed to the Brewers and for a long term growth plan. This can only be done with a consistent management team. He also needs to forlk out the money and sign Jenkins and Sexson. Attendence will only continue to fall without them, especially Sexson.

Congratulations to all the Brewers and good luck to Scott Podsednik as the Rookie of the year balloting draws near! He deserves it.

Get Up! Get Up! Get Outta Here! GONE!

    Congratulations Geoff Jenkins!!!!

    FINAL RESULTS:
2,872,200 votes for Jenkins...Those two hundred are probably mine!

Having Jenkins on the ballot for the 32nd man is generated a lot of positive buzz nationwide, which is great considering the Brewers tend to get a lot of negative publicity due to their Selig connection. Often, the press will run with the smallest bit. Crazy! Anyway, from MLB.com: "Patrick & Co. [ESPN's Dan Patrick, Trey Wingo, Sean Salisbury and Rob Dibble] are not the only ones who have looked at the stats, recognized how far Jenkins has come since his season-ending ankle injury last June, and taken up his cause. Jim Rome pumped Jenkins throughout his show on Wednesday, and Brewers broadcaster Daron Sutton called his contacts with the Tigers, Angels and Braves and asked them to make the case. The campaign also continued locally, with more radio and TV interviews and with a barrage of promos at Miller Park, where the Brewers took on the Pirates. "I feel pretty good that my fans are going to vote for me," Jenkins said. "But the big thing is getting out there [to a national audience]. I just want to know. Can I play?"

Sadly, Jenkins, was the only non-pitcher not to play as the AL won in the bottom of the eighth.

On July 9, 2003, on the one year anniversary of the Milwaukee All Star Game debacle, Pittsburgh Pirates' first baseman, Randall Simon hit the Italian Sausage in the head during the seventh inning sausage race. The 18-year old woman in the top heavy costume fell to the ground stunned. While she only had minor cuts, this incident should have never happened. It has caused quite the sir nationwide. While I am not outraged that the incident happened, I am outraged with the excuse and 'punishment.'

Simon stated that he "was just trying to get a tap at the costume and for her to finish the race." Since when do you take a bat with both hands and "tap" someone on the head?

He continued to say "I thought at the moment they were trying to play with us. They were running right next to the players." Apparently, Simon wasn't paying attention the previous nights as the sausages always run the same path which happens to be the warning track past the visitors dugout.

Simon was only charged $432 for the incident, which is probably what he spends on an average meal as he makes roughly $1.5 million according to WTMJ radio. He will not face any criminal charges.

What would the result have been if a fan would have been involved and made up the same excuse? Would the fan get off that easily? I highly doubt it.

MLB, however decided a three game suspension and a $2000 fine was a better punishment. I would agree.

"I'm a fun player, and I've never hurt anyone in my life." Well, Mr. Simon, I guess you can't say that anymore.

This said, the "Sausage" runner has forgiven Simon, so I think we can too. That doesn't mean we can't have fun with him, though, and his whopping $432 disturbing the piece ticket

A "Sausagegate" wrap-up
By Mark Kass, OnMilwaukee.com, 7/12/03

"COUNTDOWN’s “Top 3” athletes who possess that “street credibility” everybody says Kobe is seeking-or lacking, anyway. No. 1 (sic), Chris Webber, the Sacramento player today, pleaded guilty to criminal content for lying about having taken money from a booster while at Michigan. No. 2, Jerry Stackhouse, the Washington Wizards player arrested in North Carolina yesterday, charged with misdemeanor assault after a dispute with his landlady. And No. 1, Randall Simon of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nothing the street respects more than an Al Capone-style baseball-bat-whacking of a giant Italian sausage. Mean one."

From Newsweek, 7/21/03:

"The sausage race at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, turned ugly when the Pittsburgh Pirates' Randall Simon thwacked the Italian sausage, Mandy Block, 19, with a bat as she passed by the dugout. She and an adjaceny hot dog toppled over, but neiter was hurt. Simon, who was suspended for three games and fined $2,432, apologized, but TV sports and news shows were grateful for a video they could replay endlessly."
